China contributing more to global governance

China’s proposal to build a community of shared future for mankind is gaining more recognition and support.

“Building a community of common destiny for mankind, to me, is the only future for humanity on this planet,” said Peter Thomson, president of the 71st session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, in an interview with Xinhua.

The world is undergoing a period of major development, major changes, and major adjustments. Peace and development are still the themes of the times, but there are also problems, such as a governance deficit, trust deficit, peace deficit, and development deficit. The future and destiny of mankind are facing challenges. What kind of world to build and how to build that world have become major issues that mankind must face.

In light of this, it is of great relevance to propose building a community of shared future for mankind, noted Liu Jianfei, a professor from the International Strategic Research Institute at the Party School of the Central Committee of CPC.

With the in-depth development of world multi-polarization, economic globalization, social informatization, and cultural diversification, the degree of interdependence among countries continues to deepen. A community of shared future for mankind objectively exists, yet the motivation for its further development is not sufficient, especially when it comes to jointly addressing financial risks, environmental crises, terrorism, and other challenges.

Wang Jian, director of the Institute of International Studies at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said that the COVID-19 pandemic shows that global cooperation and coordination must be strengthened in the face of global challenges, such as public health crises, climate change, financial risks, and network security.

“When responding to the pandemic, our country has worked hand in hand with other countries to actively promote global public health governance,” said Zhu Feng, director of the Institute for International Relations at Nanjing University.

After proposing to jointly build the Belt and Road (B&R) initiative, China has taken measures to promote its high-quality development, including the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The country also initiated the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Silk Road Fund, and the China International Development Cooperation Agency to increase foreign development assistance.

As of January 31, 2021, 171 countries and international organizations have signed 205 intergovernmental cooperation documents for the joint construction of the B&R initiative with China.

Zhu said that implementing the B&R initiative will facilitate building a community of shared future for mankind.

China firmly upholds fair, reasonable, and transparent international trade rules and market order. On the basis of deepening political, economic, and social ties with other countries, it has provided a Chinese approach to boosting world economic growth.

In 2020, China achieved the poverty reduction goals set by the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ten years ahead of schedule, providing a Chinese solution for global poverty reduction governance.

“Such historical achievements in poverty alleviation, and the effective control of the COVID-19 pandemic, showcase that China has set a good example for national governance,” Liu said.

In the era of economic globalization, various traditional and non-traditional security issues will bring challenges to human survival and development. No country is a closed island.

Today’s world has entered a new era of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Everything, said Wang Yiwei, a professor from the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China. To build a community of shared future for mankind, it is important to highlight openness and tolerance, as well as respect for national sovereignty, and the core concerns of all countries.

“We should turn the deep sea, polar regions, outer space, and the internet into new territories for cooperation among all parties, rather than arenas for competition,” Wang Yiwei suggested.
