On October 12th, outstanding students from China and Russia met together on Renmin University of China's (RUC) campus to put on a theatrical performance for the opening ceremony of the Chinese-Russian Student Festival of the Arts.

Vice-Chairman of the University Council, Wu Fulai, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Education Association for International Exchange, Zong Wa, the head of the delegation of Russian art students, Olga Poleshchuk, and over 400 other students and teachers, were in attendance for the ceremony’s performance.

Vice-Chairman Wu gave a speech warmly welcoming the Russian students to RUC. He noted that historically, young people have taken an important role in developing and maintaining world peace. Now they represent the new activists for strong Sino-Russian relations, meaning that expanding educational exchanges between the two countries is strategically very important in the development of future relations between them. Hosting this festival is important because it improves links between China and Russia and enhances friendship between the two countries’ youth. He hopes that the students can take full advantage of this valuable opportunity, truly experience the other country’s culture and traditions, use art to communicate with one another, and use cultural understanding to propagate friendship.

Ms. Poleshchuk expressed congratulations on the behalf of the Russian Ministry of Education and Culture for the successful event, saying that this festival promotes cultural exchange between their countries’ youth, as well as their long-term development goals.

Throughout the day, people gathered at RUC in order to view stellar performances by both Chinese and Russian artists. The Russian student group performed the dance “I Chose You And You Chose Me,” the song “Rose,” the Dagestan dance, a Russian circle dance “Along the Grass,” the dance “Children,” an organ solo, and other traditional songs and dances to display Russian’s unique heritage, charm, and traditions.

There were also a number of Chinese performers including a choir, a dance company, a symphony and keyboard orchestra, Peking Opera, an a capella rendition of “Beauty of the Prairie Night,” the classical dance “On the Love of the Lotus,” a western string quartet, and other classical songs and dances ending with the traditional folk dance “Splendid China.” Many of the performances incorporated Russian elements to help expand on the cultural and artistic dialogue between China and Russia.

Before the festival, Vice-Chairman Wu and Deputy Secretary-General Zong met with Russian representatives to discuss how to promote the festival and other exchanges between students of each country. This festival has been a great tool for promoting cultural exchanges and this year marks the 11th session, with the first festival held in 2003.

RUC has a deep-rooted history of exchanges with Russia, dating all the way back to the Soviet era. In recent years, RUC has developed exchanges with multiple Russian universities including Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, People’s Friendship University of Russia, St. Petersburg National Economic University, and other famous institutions. Areas of cooperation include economics, finance, international relations, and energy research. These are done through teacher and student exchanges, joint-research projects, extensive communication and other high-level platforms. In 2011, the RUC School of Economics, the RUC School of Foreign Languages, and the St. Petersburg National Economic University signed a joint postgraduate research agreement. In May, RUC President Chen Yulu led a delegation to visit with universities in Russia and signed an agreement with St. Petersburg State University to build a Russian Research Center.
