US Ambassador to China and L.A. Mayor visit PKU

Recently, Max Baucus, US Ambassador to China, and Eric Garcettij, Los Angeles Mayor, visited Peking University (PKU). Professor Zhu Shanlu, Chairman of PKU Council, received the guests at Linhuxuan.

At the beginning, Zhu Shanlu accorded a welcome to the Ambassador and the Mayor. “Peking University has developed good cooperation with many universities and institutes in Los Angeles, California.

During the recent APEC summit, G20 summit and President Obama’s visit, China and America have reached consensus on many issues. Cooperation between the two countries is facing a new historic opportunity.” Zhu Shanlu said, “Universities and cities combine tightly.” He also suggested a deeper cooperation among the universities in Beijing and L.A., for example, cooperation in the field of air pollution problems, especially the smog.

Ambassador Baucus expressed his approval of the cooperation. “L.A. accumulates considerable experience in air pollution control, where PKU could develop cooperative projects. The study and exploration of clean energy technology contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions, which would benefit the whole world and future generations.”

Mayor Garcetti responded his hope for the deeper cooperation between Beijing and L.A as well as the universities in both cities. He also expressed the willingness of L.A to hold discussions and communications to deepen the collaboration in climate change area.

After the meeting, Ambassador Baucus and Mayor Garcetti attended the academic exchange entitled “The Urban Sustainable Development Worldwide” at the Stanford Center of PKU.

Background Info:

Max Baucus, US Ambassador to China. He formerly served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance. Baucus was deeply involved in orchestrating congressional approval of permanent normal trade relations with China in 2000 and in facilitating China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization in 2001.

Eric Garcetti, 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles. He won in a nonpartisan election for Mayor in May last year. Having lived in Thailand, Burma and China, he knows well about Asian society On Nov 15th, he embarked on his first visit to China after his election, with an 80-member delegation of local officials and business leaders. He visited Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing, negotiating intercity cooperation in the field of tourism, commerce, environment and education.
