QS World University Ranking by Subject released

According to the QS World University Ranking by Subject released on April 29, 21 subjects of Peking University rank top among Mainland China universities. These subjects are Philosophy, Modern Languages, History, Linguistics, English Language and Literature, Psychology, Computer Science, Law, Chemistry, Accounting and Finance, Communication and Media Studies, Dentistry, Earth and Marine Sciences, Sociology, Politics and International Studies, Physics and Astronomy, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Mathematics, Medicine, Economics and Econometrics, and Business and Management Studies.

PKU led the group of schools in Mainland China in the ranking. 22 subjects (61.1% of the total) of PKU are in the top 50, and 31 (81.1% of the total) are in the top 100. PKU’s overall competitiveness shows a balanced development among different disciplines. And, compared with the result in 2014, 6 subjects rise significantly—Modern Languages rises from 22nd to 5th; Law from between 51-100th to 18th; Pharmacy and Pharmacology from 38th to 22nd; History from 49th to 30th; Sociology from 49th to 33rd; and English Language and Literature from between 51-100th to 35th.

Subjects of Peking University that ranked first in Mainland China in 2015

The competence of mainland schools is growing. Besides Peking University and Tsinghua University, other universities have shown their potentials in a wide range of subjects, including Tongji University with its Architecture ranking 16th, and China Agricultural University with its Material Science ranking 18th.

In general, Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, and other prestigious universities in the US and Britain are still in the leading positions in most subjects. In Asia, National University of Singapore and the University of Tokyo excel in many subjects. 11 subjects of National University of Singapore are in the top 10, 23 subjects in the top 20; and 7 subjects of the University of Tokyo are in the top 10, 12 subjects in the top 20.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is a British company specialising in education and studying abroad. It started launching the QS World University Rankings in collaboration with the Times Higher Education from 2004, and began launching the ranking on its own from 2010 after the collaboration ended. In order to provide a more comprehensive picture of subjects, QS World University Ranking by Subject has been released annually since 2011. The 2015 ranking by subjects covers 36 subjects in Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The QS World University Ranking by Subject is based on the Academic reputation, Employer reputation and Research citations per paper of the academic institution.
