A Symposium on Academic Discourse for Chinese History Research convened in Beijing on April 16. It was jointly held by the World Socialism Research Center under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the Research Center for History Experience of New China under the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, CASS. The event aimed to promote a disciplinary system and academic discourse for Chinese history studies, while also strengthening education and dissemination of Chinese history research.

The symposium was based on a review of the developments, major achievements and fundamental experiences of Chinese history studies since the country’s reform and opening-up. Participants conducted in-depth discussions on the theoretical and practical significance of academic discourse related to Chinese history research as well as its looming challenges. Enhancing the dominant right and influencing academic discourse amid globalization and informatization were also debated.

The one-day meeting was jointly hosted by Zhang Xingxing and Wang Linggui, both deputy directors of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, CASS. More than 20 experts and scholars from history research circles, including those who specialize in studying the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC), attended the event.

It was agreed that Chinese history studies bear great meaning in the ideological and theoretical construction of the CPC, and shoulder the political mission and academic responsibility of compiling history for the nation and biographies for the people. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and especially since its reform and opening-up over the past 30 years, the CPC has been attaching high importance to the cause of CPC history and Chinese history research. This has been in an effort to consolidate the guiding role of Marxism in the Chinese ideological sphere, arouse the national spirit of the Chinese people of all ethnic groups with patriotism at the core and the spirit of the times, and boost the confidence in the path, theories and system of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

However, hostile international forces have never stopped Westernizing and dividing China in one way or another. Among others, they make use of their powerful voice for ideological penetration, taking CPC history and Chinese history as a point of departure and hyping historical nihilism, echoing the domestic noise of negating the leadership of the CPC, socialism, reform and opening-up and the theories, paths, guiding principles and policies of the CPC. Confronted with various challenges and tests from home and abroad, we must hold fast to the guidance of public opinion, regain and strengthen our voice, and safeguard ideological security.

The symposium indicated the construction of academic discourse in Chinese history research is conducive to learning from history, elaborating on socialism with Chinese characteristics, expounding on the Chinese dream featuring the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, cementing the common ideological base of people of all ethnic groups, thus telling Chinese stories in the international community well and conveying the voice and stance of China.

Participating experts suggested basing Chinese history research about the 5,000-year history of Chinese civilization and the centennial history of modern China on the development trend of world history and the historical rules of rise and decline of great powers. In addition, it is necessary to reveal the theme and main line of Chinese history, illuminate the successful experience and striking features of China Road, China Experience and China System, and create a positive image of China for the development of the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics and a favorable international opinion environment.
