It is increasingly urgent for China to build cultural soft power to keep pace with the growth of the nation’s comprehensive strength, said Huang Zhuoyue, director of the Research Center for Chinese Cultural Communication and Translation, at the Forum on Contemporary Chinese Literature Translation and Communication held in Beijing on June 26.
“Powerful support for culture is needed to make China an attractive and respected major country,” Huang said.
Bai Ye, chairman of the China Contemporary Literature Research Academy, said the writers and works that best exemplify national literature should be emphasized in the process of going global. Only by appreciating such excellent works can foreigners better understand China, Bai said.
Hosted by the Research Center for Chinese Cultural Communication and Translation at Beijing Language and Culture University, the forum involved over 40 domestic literary critics, scholars and editors who discussed such issues as what Chinese literary works should be highlighted and how to promote them overseas.
