The National School of Development at Peking University hosted a symposium that explores the impact that recently released policies sanctioning online ride-hailing services will have on the development of the taxi industry and the Internet economy on Aug. 3. There was a consensus at the symposium that sanctioning these services will be a boon to an emerging sharing economy. The breakthroughs in the transportation industry will set an example for the integration of network technologies in industries, such as finance, health care and education. This decision represents a rational step toward the modernization of national governance, said Fu Jun, acting dean of the School of Government at Peking University. There is no doubt that the sanctioning of online ride-hailing services will increase competition in taxi industry while diversifying the modes of transportation available to the general public, he said.
