Cultural construction highlighted in sociology

Author  :  Li lingjing     Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2016-08-25

Studies of sociology in the globalization era should approach today’s issues through the lens of cultural conflict and harmony, said Li Peilin, vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, at the symposium “Globalization: Social Change and Cultural Construction” held at Jilin University from Aug. 12 to 13.

Li added that scholars and leaders must engage in cultural construction and transformation while striving to achieve intercultural understanding and tolerance. Openness combined with cultural diversity, creativity and construction and integration are all important perspectives through which social change can be understood in the context of globalization, Li added.

Martin Albrow, honorary vice-president of the British Sociological Association, said that against the backdrop of globalization, scholars should pay close attention to cultures with a distinctive local or regional quality. He noted that China has made significant contribution to pushing forward global governance by proposing the common and diversified development among countries and regions through the “Belt and Road” strategy.
