With an emphasis on “Belt and Road” construction and linguistic diversity, scholars discussed topics at the frontiers of language policy at a symposium on the future of language and the Fourth Young Scholars’ Workshop held in Nanjing from Aug. 26 to 27.
Scholars said enterprises will need expertise in a variety of languages to participate in the “Belt and Road” initiative. Intercultural and professional communication skills are in high demand. However, these enterprises lack long-term foreign language plans. In addition, the number of specialized language courses at universities is insufficient to meet the large demand from enterprises for a personnel with proficiency in a diversity of languages.
In a multilingual cultural context, the use of English as an international language still faces challenges. It is thus necessary to pay further attention to issues related to language learning and use, such as super-linguistic phenomena, while promoting awareness of intercultural communication, optimizing language teaching from the ecological perspective and cultivating intercultural communicative talent.
