Scholars navigate values in a changing world

From August 10 to 11, the International Academic Forum on Values in A Changing World was held at Shaanxi Normal University in northwest China. The participating scholars discussed the frontiers of comparative studies on Chinese and Western values, progress in research on the socialist core values, updates in value theory research, and cultural progress and values.

Real philosophy captures the essence of the times’ spirit, said Wu Xiangdong, dean of the School of Philosophy at Beijing Normal University, adding that the changing world and values are calling on contemporary philosophers with questions: How do we interpret the changing world from the philosophical perspective? How do we respond to the conflicts and challenges in values in the changing world? What kind of value can we use to guide these changes in a correct direction? It is the responsibility and mission of the contemporary philosophical community to answer these questions, Wu said.

In the ever-changing modern world, dialogue between eastern and western values is of great significance. Luca M. Scarantino, secretary general of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies, said that the values in a changing world profoundly reflect the global landscape and the missions of contemporary philosophers. Researching values from the philosophical point of view can offer better solutions for addressing conflicts by promoting exchange and understanding between different values. This can also help eradicate the threat of narrowminded extreme values, contributing to regional and global peace.

According to Yuan Zushe, dean of the School of Philosophy and Government at Shaanxi Normal University, concepts such as “a community of shared future for mankind” put forward by the Chinese President Xi Jinping have showcased the country’s sophisticated philosophical wisdom as an ancient civilization as well as its credibility as a responsible major country that is taking the world’s center stage in the modern context. All this has been changing the prerequisites for and redressing the problems of adopting the “value system” dominated by Western discourse, earning respect worldwide.
