The China Public Diplomacy Forum subtitled “Win-win cooperation and the story of China” was held in Beijing in late November.

Liu Wei, president of Renmin University of China, said that public diplomacy, as a type of lubricant for interstate relations, plays a unique role in China’s course of peaceful development. Important tasks for current Chinese diplomacy are as follows: The country should tell China stories to the world through public diplomacy, enhance people’s understanding of China around the world, strive to gain support for the Chinese dream from all countries in the world, and promote win-win cooperation among China and all other countries.

Guo Weimin, deputy director of the State Council Information Office of the PRC, put forward four suggestions on how to promote public diplomacy in the new era. First, we should improve at the ideological level, focusing on creating a good external environment for China’s development by using public diplomacy. Second, we should innovate with concepts of communication to improve our ability to shape the country’s image. Third, it is necessary to strengthen resource planning and continuously expand channels of public diplomacy. Fourth, we should also grasp development trends and promote public diplomacy’s continuous innovation and development.

Shi Mingde, a member of China’s Foreign Policy Advisory Group, said that since the founding of the PRC 70 years ago, China’s diplomacy has undergone tremendous changes and the country has become an indispensable backbone for advancing global governance and building a community of shared future for mankind. As two important forces in the world, China and the EU should hold the banner of multilateralism, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, firmly maintain an open world economy, improve global governance, and maintain world peace and stability.

Gao Anming, deputy director of the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, suggested that to best express China’s “harmony” concept and its goodwill, and to build up an international discourse and value system with Chinese characteristics that integrates China and foreign countries, we should strengthen cultural dissemination and research on public opinions and the national image, build a think tank exchange platform, carry out civilized dialogues, and promote people-to-people relationships.
