At a seminar on Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao literature recently held in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, scholars discussed such topics as the history and reality behind Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao literature.

Zhu Shoutong, a professor from the Chinese Department of Macao University, said that Macao literature is mainly written in Chinese. Reviewing the diversity of Macao literature under this premise, especially the harmonious co-existence between Macao literature and literature in other languages, one may see that it embodies the openness and inclusiveness of maritime civilization.

Contemporary writers need to fully understand the role regional culture plays in molding literary personality from perspectives of history and geography. Zhao Xifang, a research fellow from the Institute of Literature at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, analyzed the Hong Kong Literary circles that existed around the initial period of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, starting with relations between native Hong Kong writers and Chinese mainland writers who came to Hong Kong during the war. The development of regional literature can be demonstrated only by discussing relations between regions, Zhao said.

He Zhongming, a professor from the Liberal Arts College of Jinan University, said that the culture and life of the Lingnan area are unique. Writers should strengthen their consciousness of regional culture when creating.
