July 7 marks the 77th anniversary of the Lugou Bridge Incident, or Marco Polo Bridge Incident. The 1937 battle between the armies of China and Japan, in Beijing’s Fengtai district, marked the beginning of the full-scale Japanese invasion. To memorialize those who contributed and sacrificed during the war, an Independent Medal of Freedom Memorial was unveiled at the Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in Beijing. Made of wrought brass, the medal measures four meters in length, 3.2 meters in breadth and 27 centimeters in height. The memorial has Chinese and English inscriptions of “1937.7.7” and “the Site of the Outbreak of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.”
The Chinese version appeared in Chinese Social Sciences Today, No. 618, July 9, 2014.
