90% of Chinese cities unhealthy: report

Author  :       Source  :    People’s Daily     2014-09-26

Nearly 90 percent of Chinese cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, have been rated “unhealthy” in the Blue Book of Cities in China: Annual Report on Urban Development of China No.7 released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) on September 17. A total of 287 cities, except Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region and Sansha in Hainan Province, were evaluated in terms of their development in 2013. Due to rapid and extensive urbanization, most Chinese cities are plagued by environmental degradation, severe traffic congestion and surging housing prices. Only 23 cities, including Shenzhen, Guangdong Province; Shanghai; Suzhou, Jiangsu Province; and Dalian, Liaoning Province; can be considered “healthy.”
