The Annual Report of National Governance Index (2016) was released in Shanghai on Jan. 8. Developed by the Political Science Institute at East China University of Political Science and Law, the report aims to accurately assess the national governance levels of countries all over the world by compiling an index that evaluates the system of national governance. China ranks 28th among the 192 countries evaluated in the report, while Denmark tops the list.

Gao Qiqi, who is in charge of research and development for the project and director of the Political Science Institute at East China University of Political Science and Law, said that compared to 2015, the 2016 index has improved in terms of data collection and analysis, with the number of evaluated countries increasing by 81 compared to 2015.

As a whole, the national governance levels of major countries in the world are relatively balanced. Top 30 countries in the ranking have similar scores. They can be divided into two types, excluding China: traditional developed countries that have accomplished modernization, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, and countries that have small-scale governance, such as Denmark, Switzerland and Singapore, Gao said.

Some experts pointed out that the concept of national governance can be further clarified through the national governance index, and China’s development in recent years can also be objectively evaluated. The overall and itemized rankings help to identify weak points of national governance, providing concrete suggestions for future reform, they said.
