New figures have shown that the digital readers in China have exceeded 300 million in 2016, 12.3 percent more than the year before, and China’s digital reading market has reached 12 billion yuan, according to the 2016 digital reading white paper released at the 2017 digital reading conference in Hanzhou from Apr.14 to 15.

In addition to a rapid growth in quantity, the quality of digital reading in China has improved and its revenue structure is becoming more diversified. The share of copyright and advertising revenue in total revenues rose from 3.4 to 6.5 percent and 3.1 to 4.8 percent respectively in comparison with 2015. The copyright development plays a vital role in the industry value chain of digital reading, for example, in 2016 nearly 60 percent of the hit dramas adapted are those works published on digital platforms.
