The findings of “Poems of the Republican Era: Chronological Documentation and Synopses,” a flagship project sponsored by the National Social Sciences Fund, were announced recently at a press conference hosted by Nanjing Normal University (NNU). At the event, scholars also launched the Database of Classical Literature and Culture in the Republican Era. Cao Xinhua, the NNU professor who headed the project, said there is a broad range of printed materials on Republican poems and lyrics, and these resources have not yet been comprehensively collated. More research is needed to shed light on these documents through either a historical or critical approach, Cao said. Scholars involved in the project have already published Poetics and Prosody of the Republican Era: Rare Documents, Collation and Research, which is 20 million words in length, and a 40-volume compendium titled Sequels of Literary Societies in Late Qing and Republican Eras.
