Facts, evidence in philosophy, law debated

Author  :       Source  :        2016-06-15

Facts and evidence are legal and philosophical concepts that have been included into epistemological discussion ever since Plato, by way of his teacher Socrates, made his famous distinction between “true belief” and “knowledge,” said Tong Shijun, a tenured professor of philosophy at East China Normal University at a forum titled “Facts and Evidence: A Dialogue Between Philosophy and Law.” Philosophers and jurists from China and abroad examined whether or not it is possible and how to ascertain facts by investigating evidence. Topics such as philosophical and legal epistemology, mutually beneficial relations between philosophy and law and comparison between different legal families and legal cultures were discussed. Participants agreed that cross-disciplinary studies between law, philosophy, psychology, linguistics and some other disciplines should be conducted to find facts through evidence.
