Interdisciplinary Himalayan database takes shape

Author  :       Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2016-01-22

In the past few years, Sichuan University and Cambridge University have been working on building a multimedia interdisciplinary database to store information related to the Himalayan region. The joint project assembled a team of accomplished ethnologists, historians and geographers as well as computer and information scientists, and scholars of Tibetan studies and religions. “The Himalayan region is distinctive in its striking development potential. Meanwhile, it is also a breeding ground of sensitive issues involving geopolitics, transnational and cross-regional development, ethnic relations, and environmental sustainability,” said Luo Zhongshu, a professor from Sichuan University. The database can be organized around high-profile research topics, such as population health, water resources and ecological preservation, said James Lee, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
