Author  :       Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2015-11-05

Chinese medical scientist Tu Youyou being awarded a Nobel Prize for the discovery of artemisinin reignited a debate on the value of traditional Chinese medicine. At a recent seminar in Beijing, Li Jianhui, a professor from Beijing Normal University, said surely traditional Chinese medicine can cure illness, but the issue of which substances actually work should be approached in a scientific way. Modern medical science allows us to analyze the active ingredients in medicine and their mechanisms for curing illnesses. In this regard, traditional Chinese medicine can tell us which ingredients can become the object of analysis. Therefore, traditional Chinese medicine not only is a treatment but also offers a foundation for modern medical research.
