A rational understanding of science is needed that supports its healthy development while recognizing its limitations, said Liu Dachun, a professor from the School of Philosophy at Renmin University of China, at the eighth China-Netherlands (Europe) Academic Exchange Conference on Bioethics held by the Beijing Association for Science and Technology on July 19 in Beijing, which explored how to conduct research and innovation while adhering to the scientific spirit in technology era. Li Xingmin, from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized the critical and skeptical spirit based on evidence. Science is not an individual pursuit of the truth but rather a collective undertaking for the benefit of all mankind, and it is also a social activity that must be governed by ethics and social rules, said Pawet Łuków, a professor at the University of Warsaw, Poland.
