From the Historic Memory and Perception: Avoiding Sino-Japanese Conflict

Author  :       Source  :    Japanese Studies No.1(2014)     2014-01-07

Abstract: The difficulties between China and Japan now focus on the conflicting territorial claims over islands the Japanese call the Senkakus and the Chinese call Diaoyudao. The dangers of accident and conflict are real and if an accident occurred, reconciliation between China and Japan could be delayed for decades or even longer, which would be bad for Japan, for China, and for the rest of the world. Great effort should be made to start the process of improving Sino-Japanese relations, with the aim that two great countries can work together peacefully. Japan should avoid actions China considers provocative, while China should not use armed pressure. The meeting of high level political leaders and people-to-people communication between China and Japan should be rebuilt and expanded.
