The launching ceremony of a China-India cooperation project on low carbon, the “China-India Low Carbon Study 2014”, was held at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) office in Beijing on March 17.
Speaking about intensifying cooperative research between China and India on the issue of climate change, Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, chairman of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), pointed out that the two countries operate in similar contexts in terms of the local and global environmental issues that confront them today, issues which will become increasingly serious in the future. “While the economic capabilities and institutional systems vary between the two countries, coordinated knowledge-driven processes between China and India will be instrumental in moving both toward global sustainability goals,” said Dr. Pachauri.
As one of the results of the first cooperative project between major Chinese and Indian institutions on climate change, the “China-India Low Carbon Study 2014” will provide proposals for promoting cooperation, enhance the sharing of experience and knowledge and help formulate as well as implement the related policies of the two sides. The study explores the main factors in enhancing low carbon development, which include funding, low carbon technologies and implementation on the ground.
The participants in the ceremony agreed that developing countries possess the most opportunities for innovation which can benefit the local environment and human development. According to the study, important future areas for technological cooperation between China and India will include clean coal incineration, power-generation technologies, energy-saving technologies for the industrial, building and transportation sectors, wind power, solar power and carbon capture.
