Ethnic paleography studies help to cultural inheritance

The tenth Academic Symposium of the Association of Ethnic Paleography Studies in China was recently held by Yunnan Minzu University in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province. Panel discussions were held on the interpretation and preservation of the ancient literature of China’s various ethnic groups, including Khitan, Jurchen, Naxi, Shui and Yi. During the symposium, a field investigation was made to the hometown of A Ke, who is believed to be one of the possible persons who first compiled the written system of Yi language, which is also known as Yi characters with tadpole-like strokes, in the Tang Dynasty (618—90). During the investigation there, scholars were presented with rich material and cultural pictures of the Yi people. Scholars agreed that the studies of ancient ethnic languages, like what A Ke did a thousand year ago, would contribute to preserving the cultural legacy of ethnic groups.
