On May 5, academia convened a symposium to discuss the revised edition of the ISO 7098 Information and Documentation-Chinese Romanization, which was published under the approval of the International Organization for Standardization on December 2015. The revised edition has adapted to requirements of the information and network era, making it more useful, said Feng Zhiwei, head of the revision group and a research fellow from the Institute of Applied Linguistics of the Ministry of Education. The international standard of Chinese Romanization was launched in 1982 and underwent fine-tuning in 1991. Out of concern that standardization has failed to keep pace with the times, China proposed to revise it in 2011.
