Abstract:One falls ill most easily in his late years. Both physically and psychologically, the old are suffering from more inflictions than in any other period. Since China is gradually stepping into the aging society, it becomes an increasingly important problem concerning all society how to make the old feel happy and comfortable in their remaining years, especially in the extreme hours of their lives, how to let them leave the world with dignity, and how to make their relatives and friends have less sadness. In order to solve these social problems, the author suggests that we have to develop hospice widely in China. In particular, we should develop the Buddhist theories and their practical experiences about hospice because Buddhism has already established some advanced theories and accumulated much practical experiences in hospice. However, only Buddhists can benefit from these theories and experiences. At the time when we are advocating the building of a harmonious society, we should encourage the participation of all social strengths in solving the problems of the aging society and greatly promote the Buddhist ideas of hospice so as to guide people to finish their life journeys without pain.

This article can be divided into three parts: The first part is to explain the concept of hospice, why we need to advocate it in our country at present and to analyze its necessity and urgency.

The second part introduces the development of hospice, the relation between the religion and hospice in western countries. The concrete practices of Christianity, Catholicism and other religions will also be introduced. At the same time, the author introduces the development of hospice in our country, for example, the first research hospice center was founded in Tianjin in 1988. Now Beijing Ningbo and so forth have some hospice hospital, too.

The third part introduces how to propagandize the Buddhism's theory of hospice. The author cites an example to illustrate the superiority of hospice. And this part also introduces the theory of hospice and concrete measures. Some people think that the practice method of theory of hospice is very good, but there has a shortcoming that only few people can enjoy it and the locations are also restricted. In order to relieve the bitterness of the aged people, we should carry forward this tradition of Buddhism. At the same time, we should increase the locations under the permission of laws and regulations.

So that the dying people will suffer from less no bitterness and their relatives and friends will have less sadness. It is undoubtedly meaningful and beneficial to the construction of our harmonious society, and also accord with the demand of building the socialism harmonious society.
