Consensus Statement of the International Forum on Sharing Poverty Reduction Experience

Author  :       Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2020-12-24

On December 14–15, 2020, the International Forum on Sharing Poverty Reduction Experience was held online, with more than 200 participants from over 60 countries and 20 international organizations. On the theme of “Promoting Global Poverty Reduction and Building a Global Community of Shared Future,” we, the participants, shared our poverty reduction experience, discussed future cooperation for common development, and reached the following consensus:

We recognize that poverty elimination is the shared mission of humanity and that people in all countries share a fundamental right to pursue a happy life. Thanks to the concerted endeavors of all countries, historical progress has been achieved in reducing poverty across the globe. However, an increasing number of people are now facing the threat of poverty as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and countries need to make greater efforts to fight poverty.

We note the enormous efforts made by some countries and organizations in the cause of global poverty reduction. We highly appreciate the impressive progress they have achieved and the helpful experience they have gained in eliminating poverty. We recognize the positive role of this forum in sharing experience and learning from each other to promote further progress in global poverty reduction. We should conduct more exchanges to share experience and practices, and support and encourage countries to explore ways of poverty reduction that suit their own national conditions, so as to make a greater contribution to global poverty reduction.

We hold that an open and inclusive international community that is built on peace and cooperation is of vital importance to global poverty reduction. We should safeguard fairness and justice in the international community, develop an open world economy, oppose unilateralism, protectionism and hegemonism, and create a favorable external environment for international endeavors in poverty reduction. We should increase North-South dialogue, enhance South-South cooperation, conduct pragmatic cooperation on infrastructure, energy and resources, modern agriculture, green growth and environmental protection, the digital economy and other fields, foster a new form of international poverty reduction cooperation under the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and build a global community of shared future that is free from poverty and pursues common development.

We hold that development is the key to ending poverty. In the effort to realize the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, countries should pursue development that is fair, open, inclusive, innovative and sustainable, and adopt effective measures to assist poor regions. We hold that fairness and justice is vital to poverty elimination. We should put people first, address inequality in the access to opportunities and the distribution of resources, and protect the rights and interests of women, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, so that everyone can share the fruits of development in a fair way.

We applaud the important contribution China has made to global poverty reduction, and express gratitude to China for hosting this forum. We will work together with China and the entire international community to make further progress in global poverty reduction.
