On the morning of October 16, the sixth set of commemorative stamps titled China’s Modern Scientists was issued at Zhejiang University. This set consists of six stamps in honor of remarkable feats of six modern scientists, including nuclear physicist Wang Ganchang, nuclear physicist Zhu Guangya, aerodynamics expert Guo Yonghuai, atmospheric physicist Zhao Jiuzhang, and computer expert Wang Xuan.

Ren Shaobo, Vice Party Secretary of Zhejiang University and Wang Wei, Vice General Manager of Zhejiang Post, co-inaugurated this set of stamps. Wang Yuzhi, Vice Chairperson of the Development Commission, received the donation of a whole set commemorative stamps for Wang Ganchang and Zhao Jiuzhang on behalf of Zhejiang University.

Since commemorative stamps for “China’s Modern Scientists” made their debut in 1988, 6 sets in memory of 26 modern scientists have been issued in total, among whom are Zhejiang University’s prominent alumni, including Chu Kochen, Bei Shizhang, Qian Sanqiang, Wang Ganchang and Zhao Jiuzhang. Wang Ganchang was crowned as “the Father of Nuclear Physics in China” and “the Father of Atomic Bombs in China”. He spent his 16 prime years at Zhejiang University where he worked as a professor and dean of the Department of Physics from 1936 and 1952. Zhao Jiuzhang, who is a pioneer of Chinese space technology and is considered as “the Father of Chinese Artificial Satellite”, graduated from Zhejiang Industrial School (now Zhejiang University).

It is the fourth time that Zhejiang University has held a launching ceremony for commemorative stamps. Stamp-collection boasts of a brilliant history at Zhejiang University. As early as 1940, it established “Meijiang Stamp-collection Club” during its westward movement and printed the “Mejiang Stamp-collection Journal”. It offered “Stamp-collection and Culture” as a general education course in February, 2008. To date, more than 6,000 students have enrolled in this course.
