Compiling work began in 2008, when Tsinghua University received into its collection 2,500 bamboo strips dating back to the Warring States period (475-221 BC) that had previously been smuggled out of China. The artifacts were arranged and their quantity calculated for the series. The first series of reports was published in 2010, with a total of 15 series to be published at a rate of one per year. The fifth series contains six bamboo strips.
