Nearly 900 books have been added to the fifth batch of the Catalogue of National Rare Ancient Books in China and 14 institutions were designated National Major Institutions for Protecting Ancient Books, according to the Chinese Ministry of Culture. Of the books added, 131 were written in languages of ethnic groups, such as Tibetan and Mongolian, and 14 were written in foreign languages, such as Latin and Italian. Hong Kong for the first time declared eight books for the list, and institutions from Tibet declared more than 400 books. Selections for the fifth batch began about two years ago. Through a sorting and reviewing process led by the Ministry of Culture in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance as well as other ministries and committees, the final selections were made out of nearly 7,400 nominated works.
