In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the transfer of sovereignty of Macao to the People's Republic of China (PRC), a symposium themed “Study of Macao History and Culture under a Global Perspective” was convened on October 12 in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Thirty scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Jinan University, Sun Yat-sen University, University of Macao and University of Hong Kong carried out in-depth discussion on the academic value of Macao studies and its current challenges.
Scholars held that Macao is a buffer zone in the understanding and fusion between Chinese and Western cultures, noting that Macao studies are an integral part of Sinology and studies of Chinese and Western transportation histories. Macao studies represent regional knowledge with global significance, said one scholar, adding that the academic paradigm of this study is characterized by “interaction and intergeneration.”
