Fostering China’s fourth pillar of economic growth

Author  :  Hao Rihong     Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2014-07-21

A symposium themed “Study on Development Strategy of Urban Agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River” was held on July 16 in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Scholars discussed the status, functional orientation, opportunities and challenges of the region’s development and urbanization.

Scholars maintained that profound changes have been taking place within the national and global economies. Economic growth and urban agglomeration have mainly been concentrated in coastal areas, but a new push is underway to emphasize equal development of coastal and inland regions. As the core of economic and social development in central China and the Yangtze River economic zones, urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River has become the fourth pillar of growth for the Chinese economy. The other three pillars are urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta, Chu Chiang Delta and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan region.
