Author :   Source : 2016-06-17
It has been 25 years since dialogue relations were established between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and a symposium was held on June 6 in Semarang, Indonesia, to mark the occasion. About 30 scholars from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia and the Philippines gathered at the symposium to look back on bilateral relations and discuss security in East Asia. Participants said that free trade and connections among ASEAN countries have improved since the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. Some of the scholars in attendance pointed out the opportunities for cooperation created by the “Belt and Road” initiative and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA). The China-ASEAN dialogue relationship has made a lot of progress in the past 25 years, and this relationship has become an important foundation for the peace, stability and development in eastern Asia, said Xu Bu, China’s Ambassador to ASEAN.
