China should include the social security system into the nation’s system of governance, granting it the same role as such macroscopic policy tools as national fiscal and finance measures, said Zheng Gongcheng, president of the China Association of Social Security and a professor of economics from Renmin University of China at the third Academic Conference on National Social Security, held from Feb. 25 to 26 in Beijing. Facing the uncertainties brought by globalization as well as the challenges of a rapidly aging population and increasing inequality, the social security system is essential to resolve social conflicts, promote social justice and encourage shared development, he said. Shen Shuguang, a professor of economics from Sun Yat-sen University, said the development of social security is not the burden of economic development, but a driving force for it.
