Writing of ethnographic art history requires ‘liquidity’

Author  :  Yu Hui     Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2016-12-26

Research on history of ethnographic art requires a writing pattern with liquidity, said Zhang Shishan, deputy dean of the Institute of Cultural Heritage at Shangdong University, at a symposium on the composition of the history of ethnographic art held on Dec. 5 by the Chinese National Academy of Arts. Handicrafts form the root of traditional Chinese culture, but their position has been challenged in modern times, said Fang Lili, dean of the Institute of Artistic Anthropology at the Chinese National Academy of Arts. The contest between traditional and modern knowledge as well as the competition between local and global culture have become more pronounced. History of ethnographic art touching upon this process of development records the history of how China integrated its tradition into globalized cultures, and ultimately how global cultures were localized, she said.
