CASS: Premier academic window to world

Author  :  BUREAU OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION, CASS     Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2017-05-09

In 1977, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) was founded based on a proposal by the late leader Deng Xiaoping. Since it was established, it has served as a major platform for China’s international exchange in humanities and social sciences.

CASS has garnered strong support from the Chinese leadership. Numerous well-known foreign experts and scholars who visited CASS were received by leaders like Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping, which conveys the messege that China is willing to be friends with countries around the world and develop with them together.

As the premier institution for the research of humanities and social sciences, CASS has adhered to the basic guideline of actively carrying out international academic exchange, striving to play its role as the national center for international communication about humanities and social sciences.

Since reform and opening up, it has organically combined the “bringing in” strategy and the central government’s policy of culture “going out.” It has vigorously expanded international academic space, playing an increasingly significant part in the nation’s construction of global soft power.

With a series of internationally influential forums, CASS has attracted growing numbers of famous foreign scholars, heads of state and politicians to visit, communicate and make speeches.

In the past four decades, CASS embraced many world leaders, royals and politicians, such as former President of European Commission José Manuel Barroso, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Indian Prime Minister Monmohan Singh, and former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

They came to discuss the global situation and hot regional issues, providing precious opportunities for the audience to better understand the international community. At the same time, by communicating with Chinese experts and scholars, they also gained a more comprehensive and deeper knowledge of China’s economic and social development.

While carrying forward excellent traditional Chinese culture, CASS has invited numerous world-renowned academics to keep abreast of theoretical research, explore the frontiers of global academic development, and absorb the essence of excellent human thought and culture.

Through exchanges, CASS also presents to renowned foreign scholars the latest issues in Chinese academia as well as China’s cultural achievements, integrating Chinese thought and culture into the global academic landscape.

With the prosperous development of philosophy and social sciences in China, CASS has accelerated its plans to “go global,” actively expanding international academic exchange and particularly valuing cooperation with top-notch institutions around the world.

So far, international exchange and cooperation have extended to more than 100 countries and regions, with more than 160 cooperation agreements inked with global academies of sciences, universities, think tanks, government departments and international organizations, establishing an all-dimensional, high-level platform for academic exchange and cooperation.

The form of exchange has developed from visits and joint seminars to cooperative research on major issues of common concern, like environmental protection, employment, economic globalization and regional cooperation. The expansion of cooperation has yielded high-quality research results and offered effective ways to cultivate first-class academic talent.

CASS has become China’s main channel for academic exchanges with major countries and regions across the world, driving Chinese-foreign cooperation in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
